PORTAL (Patient Outcomes Research to Advance Learning), led Elizabeth McGlynn, PhD, director of Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Effectiveness and Safety Research, has been approved for a three-year, $8.6 million funding award by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). The contract is part of the second phase of the development of PCORnet, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network.
As one of 34 health data networks that make up this national clinical research resource, PORTAL is studying the effectiveness of different approaches to diagnosis, treatment and management, in order to assist patients, their caregivers, and doctors in making better-informed decisions.
“We’re excited about continuing the work we’ve started as a PCORI clinical data research network,” said Tracy A. Lieu, MD, MPH, PORTAL’s co–principal investigator and director of the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research. “PCORI is unique among our major funders in its focus on involving patients and encouraging research on outcomes important to them. We hope to continue doing innovative work with our patient groups in colorectal cancer, congenital heart disease, and weight-related issues.”
This funding award continues PCORI’s support for PORTAL’s participation in PCORnet, a large, collaborative research initiative designed to link researchers, patient communities, clinicians, and health systems in productive research partnerships that leverage the power of large volumes of health data maintained by the partner networks.
PCORI provided $7 million to PORTAL during the first phase of PCORnet’s development, which began in the spring 2014.

The funding award to PORTAL has been approved by PCORI’s Board pending completion of a business and programmatic review by PCORI staff and negotiation of a formal award contract. PCORI is an independent, non-profit organization authorized by Congress in 2010 to fund research that will provide patients, their caregivers and clinicians with the evidence-based information they need to make better-informed healthcare decisions.
