The Division of Research mourns the loss of Kaiser Permanente chairman and CEO Bernard J. Tyson, who died on Nov. 10 in his sleep at the age of 60.
“Many of us remember interacting with him in person here in Oakland at the 30th anniversary celebration for the CARDIA study in 2016,” said Tracy Lieu, MD, MPH, director of the Division of Research. “Bernard was an imaginative and energetic leader and a supporter of research. His sudden passing away is a loss for us all.”
Tyson attended the 2016 celebration honoring Kaiser Permanente participants in CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) — a landmark national study of cardiovascular health and disparities. CARDIA was the first major study of heart health to enroll participants who were 18 to 30 years old, black and white, and men and women. In his remarks, Tyson thanked CARDIA participants for their contributions to the science of heart health.
“Bernard Tyson’s visit to the 30th anniversary celebration was truly exciting and a great honor to all of us who have been involved with the CARDIA study,” said DOR research scientist Stephen Sidney, MD, MPH, principal investigator for CARDIA.
“I believe that he made time in his very busy schedule to attend and to speak to study participants because he knew that the CARDIA study was helping us to understand the early, potentially modifiable antecedents of cardiovascular disease, particularly as they manifest themselves in black Americans,” Sidney added.
